It can be overboard, but it’s a nice change of pace to actually have a narrative and not just wham-bang-thank-you-sir. I mean two guys meet somewhere where there’s no clues that they’re gay, they take one look and three minutes later, or less, they’re dong the beast. Really? Risky, even if risqué! Those videos satisfy a lot of people a lot of the time. But not every film has to follow that formula or something similar. And there’s lots of possible scenarios: recruitment, training, camp, post-battle, leave, even, Lord help us, POW internment, the surrender and capture of prisoners. Just use some imagination! We have movies set in modern military situations all the time. Except for costumes and a certain urgency and sense of participating in a truly global struggle with evil, WW II isn’t much different.

That’s a very old-fashioned kind of ‘stache, the kind baseball players and firemen (with a lot of overlap of categories) used to wear in the late 19th and early 20th Cs. I think he works it. It’d be nice to see a period piece centered in that era and that brush.
