I just received this email from one of my blog readers. The title of the email is, “An open letter to the Gay Porn Industry.” He discusses the recent news about Sean Cody model Noel who got bullied and suspended from school. You might want to read it.

Recently, a story broke about a SeanCody.com performer called “Noel” and how his high school kicked him out for doing porn. I think this event should give us, the gay community (and all though gay4pay attachments), some pause. Everyone is an uproar about how wrong the school was, but few questioned whether Sean Cody did anything wrong. In fact, he probably profited off the controversy significantly. Did anyone question the porn industry’s standards?
I am big porn fan. I am also a high school teacher. If this situation would have arisen at my school, it would have put me as a gay man in a very delicate position. We teachers are under tremendous scrutiny these days. If we so much as speak to a child in a questionable way, we could lose our jobs and ruin our careers. Just the knowledge of one my students having done gay porn, would make me uncomfortable, constantly questioning every word I say to the student, every gesture, all contact in any way. If I were a coach who might find himself in the locker room with such a student it would even be worse.
You may see “Noel” as an adult, but those of us in the education community and most parents see all students in high school as kids until they graduate, regardless if they are 18 or not. We must treat them the same as always. Otherwise, the privileges they gain when becoming legal can be counterproductive to keeping them in school and on track to graduating.
Not to forget either what it look like to the non-gay community and to parents. “See we told you. Those gays just want to recruit our kids.” It’s bad enough that we appear to be constantly trying to convert straight men, but now we are going after high school kids?
I would even accept shooting the scenes while in high school, but the releasing of them should have been held until he was graduated and all college admissions offerings were secure. We must be the adults. High school students think they are invincible and are blind to the consequences of their behavior. Sean Cody should have known that Noel’s secret was going to come out inevitably and that he would suffer abuse from fellow students, at the least.
It’s time that the gay porn industry takes a stand on something other than fighting over condoms. There needs to be a promise to all of us educators and parents, that you will keep porn out of high school.

The teacher here makes some good points. However, and I’m not defending Sean Cody’s hiring practices, but 18 in our society is considered an adult from a legal perspective, so they did nothing wrong or illegal in that respect. The gay teacher, had Noel been his student, should not behave in any odd way: DO YOUR JOB. Treat all students with respect and avoid crossing any lines. Why would it make a difference in the course of a teacher-student relationship? Assign coursework as appropriate, grade said efforts, the end. If you should learn that a student is also a porn actor and that makes you uneasy, make a diligent effort to never be in a situation where your actions could be misconstrued (never be alone with the student, never socialize or contact the student outside classwork, the end). The age of majority has been set by society for the very concerns this teacher has, and some school districts have set up alternative programs for 18+ students and students with children for this very reason (adults begin to behave and live as adults). But high school student porn stars in is such a rare thing I would guess that there is not much to do about it. 18-year-olds can marry, go to war and pay taxes, and should also be able to be porn stars if they so choose.

This gay teacher brings up a point that I argued against on another blog. If the gay teacher is doing his job then he should have nothing to worry about. But it seems that he thinks it would be different if he found out that one of his adult students did gay porn. Unless this gay teacher can prove that Sean Cody did anything wrong then he should worry about himself and forget about a student at a high school that did something to help his mother out. Now some might think that doing porn to help your mother is crossing some line, but considering her response to the issue she didn’t seem to think it was a bad thing but something she appreciated him doing even if it was bareback gay porn. I am sure he got paid well and that money he got probably put food on their table and a place to stay. If you think about it it was a way for him to make quick cash which they probably needed and what better way to make it quick then to do porn where you get paid quicker than most jobs.
The school deserved to be criticized since they tried to punish the wrong person in the situation. Noel did nothing wrong and he can’t control what other people decide to watch on the internet. He did it to help his family according to him and at this point we can only take him at his word. The people that were harassing him at school should be punished along with the moron of a principle that is in charge of the school as well.
I suggest that this be a conversation in May or June when the school lets out for the summer and see how Noel finished his senior year. Then we might be able to see what impact porn had on his life.

Good points all but the teacher is missing one valuable point. There is no other legal method I can think of that would get an 18 yo that much money that fast. He was in dire need for his family so he did what he had to. Most kids in that situation might think to turn to some illegal activity – selling drugs or prostitution.
Given options like that I’m glad there was a Sean Cody there for him. Yes he will be stigmatized and may have to face consequences for his actions – sometimes from the very people he entertained – but notice how no one else was offering him a job to get him out of porn.
Or better yet, how many of these critics go around to the homeless youth who have to resort to prostitution to survive and offer them a job, support, assistance of any kind?
So to the gay high school teacher who learns one of their students is doing porn, get past your own insecurity and just do your job and teach.

As the teacher pointed out much of the situation could have been avoided if SC had just delayed release, but not delaying paying the guy if he and his family so desperately needed the cash. Everyone would have had what they wanted and needed. Very simple.

Why delay the release? No one did anything shameful or illegal. I understand that some may be uneasy about an 18 appearing in a pornographic production whilst still in high school. Would this issue exist if he had dropped out or graduated at 17 and was unemployed and not in college? Probably not. There is a perception it seems that because he was still in high school he was somehow taken advantage of or something. 18 is 18 — many porn performers are 18 or 19. If that bothers society as a whole, then perhaps the legal age for becoming an adult in most jurisdictions should be changed (but being in high school is not the issue — whether or not 18 is a fair age to consider someone an adult is — and that age, however one feels about it, is the legal age in most areas in the U.S.).

Points may well be good, but this is RIDICULOUS! Porn companies have ZERO obligation to look into the backgrounds and potential consequences of consenting adult performers, nor do they carry any resultant liability. YES….HS students think they are invincible but the porn studios DO NOT need to ensure the safety of their performers beyond the shoot itself. And waiting for the release is not a good business decision – if you shoot footage with an 18 or older adult performer, what does it matter where he goes to school, if he is out, if he is still in school, what salad dressing he likes to masturbate with? It doesn’t. I get the concern, but I think if you talked to Noel himself, he knew the consequences. Good right up and nice grammar though….I’m sure you’re one hell of a teacher.

You’re absolving the 18 year old of his own responsibility. People in 2014 need to realize porn lives on forever; images will come back to you when you apply to your job. I don’t care if you change your name, people will find out. Yes, theres more openness today but there are also ramifications. Im sure you also signed a contract and hopefully you read it as you iknow Cody owns your images and can use them however they want in any media now or in the future. So if you are successful in the future, these will come out AGAIN and AGAIN. So if it was worth the money, then you made the deal. Luckily, your parent knew about tit and is accepting so at least that secret doesnt exist. It is not Sean Cody’s responsibility not to publish it – its the performers. Some films get delayed for whatever reason for weeks, months, even years without any dire consequences. We now find it normal that business counts more than persons? And just how would a delay affect the performers responsibility for any long term consequences? I agree with Butch that society should reconsider the age of majority. SC could have made everybody’s lives a little easier, including their own, with a simple delay.

I must have been in a bad mood when I read this as I’m struggling to see what are the “good” points the teacher is making here?
I don’t see how on earth this could be a delicate situation for a gay teacher or any other sexuality teacher if he/she found out a student did porn. If a teacher did he/she wouldn’t be discussing it with the student or anybody else for that matter in any way. The teacher would simply go about the job of being a teacher ignoring this fact, because frankly it’s got nothing to do with the job of educating our children.
The assertion that “you may see Noel as an adult” is also wrong in my opinion. I don’t see Noel as an adult because he’s hit the magical age of 18, nor do I of any other 18 year old. However what I do recognise is the fact that when someone becomes 18 they are legally entitled to make a number of decisions themselves. Which right or wrong is what he did.
As for “what it looks like for the non gay community” well they can go fuck themselves. I am sick and tired of listening to people talk about how we should think about our behaviour and modify it just to keep other people happy. I don’t see any other groups of people thinking about how they may look to the gay community? Don’t be too camp because it looks bad, don’t be too vocal about things because you look militant. Fuck that shit. If some people want to hold some outdated views about converting and recruiting, get a time machine and fuck off back to the dark ages.
Finally (rant nearly over), I’m less interested about Sean Cody and if they should/shouldn’t have released the film when they did. They entered into a contract with someone and legally distributed that product. Period. I’m more interested in big corporations avoiding tax, or having terrible environmental records or paying people who work in Asia crap money to work like animals, then selling the products is the west for a fortune. The Porn business may be far from whiter than white, but holy shit our big companies are doing far worse as far as I’m concerned.

“Noel” made his bed. To think no one in his high school would not find out he was on hi-def taking it raw in the ass is at best naive….and and worst mind-meltingly stupid. What is the advice EVERY porn performers gives in interviews when asked what they would say to a guy wanting to get into porn? It is varying versions of “Understand what you are getting yourself into, and know that courtesy of the internet, it will be around forever”. I’ve checked online about salaries in gay porn. The average for non-star performers is $800-$1000 per video, so Noel probably made around $800, not a lot of money, but probably enough to help his family a bit.
As for the teacher’s letter, it seemed to be more about him than about Noel’s treatment by his school. Also, it’s obvious why Sean Cody didn’t hold the video(s) until after Noel graduated, porn producers are in the business of making quick money, so they’re not going to wait for that money. They undoubtedly knew the guy was still in high school, so all the more reason to release as fast as possible. The publicity value of a guy still in school doing porn was too good to pass up.

What some of you don’t seem to realize is that gay and lesbian teachers already find themselves the subject of a higher level of scrutiny. It’s wrong, but that’s the reality. Especially in very conservative areas. This situation only compounds it tremendously. In some school districts it would not be as much of an issue. In others if a teacher of said student was known to be gay, that would be enough for them to “reassign” the teacher and face further discrimination. Or worse. And not just from the school system, but also parents of students who attend. I personally know of a gay teacher who was reassigned because one of the parents felt uncomfortable with a gay teacher teaching his HS son. And it was just a math class!! The student wasn’t transferred to another class, the teacher was. And he has a spotless record.

We all get that gay teachers are under additional scrutiny. But there is nothing a teacher should do if they learn that one of their students is doing porn — it’s not the teacher’s responsibility. However, if the teacher was concerned that said student had somehow become involved with porn and was underage or something illegal was afoot, they could easily send an anonymous note to the police, parents or school administrators. Again, there is no logical reason a teacher would need to insert themselves into a student’s porn career (except as a viewer, of course).

I used to work as a production manager for a major gay porn company back in 2000. Back then models would make about $1000 to do a scene. I’m sure that Sean Cody, Corbin Fisher, Chaos Men, etc, models get a lot more than that now, namely when they do bareback scenes.
