Prior to me coming out, my father was pretty homophobic in the way that older, heterosexual men are: not violent about it, just confused and somewhat fearful. Fassbinder thought the actor and his parents would die of shame. While he actor (I wish I could remember his name) thought he’d die from embarrassment, his parents told him he’d done a good job.
