Mark’s posts show that he is a thoughtful and reasonable commentator on gay porn. I applaud him for providing it. Having watched porn for a great number of years and remembering back when it was condomless in the Kevin Williams days, I can appreciate the desire to return to those times. @Jordi, straight porn has a testing system overseen by an industry-wide trade association (not a director or a producer) and a set of policies for how positive results are handled. Models in mainstream straight porn are tested by medical professionals within two weeks of a shoot, their results are read by medical professionals and then their availability for work status is entered into a database accessible to other industry professionals. You test positive, you are not available for work in straight porn. By and large, it’s done a decent job of keeping HIV off straight porn sets. Gay porn has no equivalent industry-wide testing system. At most studios, the protection the men have relied on is condoms. Now they don’t even have that.

@LB that is false information, the gay porn industry may not as a whole have a system, but there are several individual studios that take it upon themselves to test their models rigorously. And the last few years the straight porn industry has shown that their testing method is not effective. They did have std/HIV breakouts which halted production on the straight porn industry more than once.

Porn companies will sell what sells, they can’t make money from selling something people don’t watch, and since so many consumers want to see guys fuck raw, thats what they will produce.
As long as these companies are very, VERY serious on getting all there models tested before any movie they make, then we can’t really argue against it.

@sxg, as far as I know, the only gay studio that tests to the straight industry’s standards is men.com. There are others that say they test, but does anyone outside the company know what they’re testing for, what tests they’re using, who’s doing the testing, who’s reading the results, who’s deciding what to do with those results and how long between the test and the shoot? As far as I know, it’s a no to most or all those questions. The straight industry’s system is far from fail safe, but it’s more transparent, lessens the conflict of interest present in studio-administered testing and gives a bareback performer some amount of assurance that his scene partner has recently tested negative for HIV, chlamydia and gonorrhea. As for the shutdowns in the straight industry, they’re part of the protocol for what happens when a model tests positive. The model doesn’t work, studios halt production and the model’s partners are notified and re-tested. It’s actually an indication of a system that attempts to maintain a safe workplace.

For me condom free porn isn’t any hotter than porn with condoms, even though I accept I’m probably in the minority. For me what makes the porn hot is the participants, not the condoms (or lack of). Sean Cody is probably my favorite studio at the moment. Its my favorite because the models are hot and they seem to really get into the sex and proper enjoy it. I’d enjoy it more if they wore condoms.

The reason why gay porn has no industry-wide testing system is because there is a lack of money with the majority of gay porn studios to fund such an organization. Gay porn might be a million dollar business but only a few companies are really profitable. Plus the competition (sometimes bordering on animosity) between gay porn companies is tremendous so the likelihood of an industry-wide testing system coming into existence is small.
I was always under the impression that studios like Corbin Fisher and Sean Cody did extensive testing for all major STI’s. Can’t imagine that they don’t do that because if it would become publicly known that a model acquired a STI on their sets their reputation as a responible gay porn company would suffer a serious blow.

@Simon from what I was told by one porn star is that the testing commonly used in straight and gay porn does not detect everything. One of the two things it doesn’t test for is genital warts and herpes. So there is still a risk that you are capable of catching something. I’m not sure if it catches syphilis or even hepatitis either.

It is misinformation to assert that if you contract HIV it can be detected within two weeks of bareback sex. The HIV strain can live one’s system for years before detection. If straight porn stars are tested every 2 weeks, and the test shows positive, it is unlikely that porn star got it from their most recent player. Frankly, I favor bareback sex and I am still NEG. I also believe much of HIV is generated from excessive drug use within gay circles (not all, logically). Drugs, including poppers, reduce the body’s resistance making the body more susceptible to viral transmission.

@Jordi, English is the most popular and most used language in the United States but we do not have an official language. Still, depending on the region a person comes from in the US depends on the accents and the dialects they use in English. People from Mississippi like Marc Dylan aren’t going to sound the same as people from the north, like Braden Charron (I can’t think of another pornstar in the north).

The ignorance is unbelievable. The reason STD’s spread is because the red states are completely terrified and demonize sex. Why is teenage pregnancy so high in the USA? It can take up to 30 days for a persons immune system to start creating anti-bodies so a person who has the virus is completely unaware they are infectious until their immune system starts producing the anti-bodies. @Tom P: There are some new tests that actually detect the presence of the virus itself. I think that Bel Ami and other studios have started using these new expensive tests. They are said to be able to detect the presence of the virus within 9-11 days of infection. Having said that, I am still vs BB and strongly suggest that the models use CONDOMS!!!
